Adab in Islam: the good manners adopted by Islam, derived from its teaching and instruction. Kinds of adab: 1. Adab ahlu dunya 2. Adab ahlul lughah 3. Adab ahlul akhirah Goals: 1) advancement of man, according to safe, proper and perfect course, at the individual, family and societal levels. 2) to rescue man from peripheral and distracting.</p><p>2. Going to bed a) Preparation: - Relieve himself - Perform wudhu - Not go to bed on a full stomach b) When to sleep: - Not to sleep before isya - In day sleep, dont sleep when a prayer time has begun unless you pray first.-</p><p>Go directly to bed after isya except for some necessary duty or to entertain a guest.</p><p>c) On the bed: - The bed should be of simple design and construction, not too comfortable.The bed should not to be set too high off the ground (this in the interest of humility). The bed should not be so placed that part of the body is in the sun and part in the shade.</p><p>d) When going to bed: - Examine mattress and pillow to ensure that no harmful insects have hidden inside them. - Recite doa before sleeping:</p><p>- Sleep on his right side and avoid sleeping on his left side. - Never sleep on his stomach. - Should not try to force our self to sleep. Make mention of God and keep mentioning Him till sleep comes. e) When awakening: - Wake up with the dawn.Start the new day as he ended the previous day by mentioning God, praising and thanking Him. Clean his teeth with toothbrush or siwak when he gets up before performing wud for fajr.</p><p>- If no running water is available, then, when he wakes, pour water over his hand first, before dipping his hand into a retaining vessel for water. This is because he does not know what his hand has touched during the night. 2</p><p>d. Relieving oneself</p><p>1. A Muslim should enter the lavatory with his left foot first, saying:</p><p> 2. Should not go to the lavatory in company, nor should private parts be uncovered to others. 3. The lavatory must not be entered with unprotected feet. This is to avoid transfer to the body of impurities and dangerous micro-organisms. 4. Purification afterwards is necessary. It is recommended that, when relieving oneself or washing, should use the left hand. 5. It is indecent for a Muslim to look at his private parts and his excretion. 6. Not to urinate or relieve himself in the direction of the qiblah.7. Talking while relieving himself is considered un-Islamic except in the case of real need. 8. If someone greets a Muslim while he is relieving himself he should not respond till he leaves the lavatory; then he should apologize to him and return the greeting.</p><p>9. Food should be prepared from only lawful ingredients. Cooking vessels belonging to non-Muslim should be thoroughly cleaned before use. Cooking a little extra broth is recommended since it will help to feed more people. If onions or garlic are liked they should be used in cooking, but should not be eaten raw as this gives rise to mouth with unpleasant odour. 5. Using silver or gold tableware is forbidden. 6. Milk and honey are the best foods. 7. The Islamic table is characterized by cleanliness, simplicity and moderation; beauty is also recommended, provided it does not result in a waste of time and energy.</p><p>b) Sitting Down to Eat 1. A Muslim should be humble to God while to eat, respecting His Grace. 2. A Muslim should not eat while lying on his back or stomach and should avoid eating while standing or walking. 3. When eating, a Muslim should be properly seated and should not lean on a cushion or on his hand. 4. He who misbehaves while eating such as by eating with his left hand or using foul language or eating from other peoples side of the platter, should be reprimanded. 3</p><p>c) Proper Table Manners</p><p>1. There is no objection to taking meals alone, thought it is better if the family gathers together for dining because it is believed, food tastes better when the family eats from a common platter. 2. Hands should be washed before and after a meal. 3. There should be no hurry to take or swallow food while it is still hot; it is better to wait until it has cooled somewhat. Breathing or blowing on food in order to cool it should be avoided. 4. On eating, a Muslim should start by saying: this doa: </p><p> and follow by</p><p>5. If a Muslim forgets to mention Gods name over the food when he begins eating he should say: 6. Food should not be taken from all sides of the platter, but eaten from that which is nearest. If, however the platter contains fruits or dates, then selection may be made from any side. 7. If a Muslim is served with food and the time for prayer comes, he should first have his food and not hasten to prayer until he has finished eating, provided there is no danger that the time for the prayer will elapse before he finishes eating. 8. Eating should be done using the right hand only, using a spoon, or using three fingers of the right hand after washing them, if spoons are not available. 9. Food should be eaten slowly and not greedily. 10. Eating cold and hot food at the same time is not recommended as it might be harmful to the teeth and stomach. 11. Talk should be light, neither controversial nor provocative, and should avoid at all costs anything involving distasteful descriptions, for this may upset others. 12. It is bad manners to talk with a mouth full of food. 13. It is permissible to greet people engage in eating, but is impolite to shake hand with them. 14. A Muslim should not eat a great amount of food. He should stop eating before his stomach is full. 15. Going to sleep immediately after eating is unhealthy. 16. Drinking out of silver or gold vessels is forbidden. Any other kind of vessel may be used. 2. Drinks should be kept clean, especially water, and the containers should be covered, especially at night. 3. A vessel should be checked before drinking to make sure that nothing has fallen into it. 4. Gods name should be mentioned upon drinking by saying:</p><p> 5. Drinking directly from the mouth of a bottle, jug, water skin or leather container should be avoided. 6. A cup with a broken edge should not be used for drinking. 7. When drinking one should not breathe into the vessel. Ones thirst should not be quenched in one gulp. The cup should be removed from mouth, a breath taken, and then a further drink. 8. One should not drink while standing, reclining or lying down, it should be carried out while sitting unless there is a necessity, for instance when drinking from a water fountain. 9. When a group of people drink, the one on the right should drink first, regardless of age that is the vessel should actually be passed to the right.
